About Katrinelund

We cannot imagine a better place to live, eat and work. For us, Katrinelund is a magically beautiful place, full of history, in the middle of nature, where all raw materials are available to create with. Therefore, we are particularly proud of our KRAV certification.

Our vision

Our vision is to create a product that lives for generations. To give you a fantastic gastronomic experience with curiosity, humility and love, where sustainability is the basis of our cooking.

In a unique and lakeside setting, we create unforgettable experiences and memories. With natural ingredients and genuine craftsmanship, we hope to exceed our guests' expectations of what gastronomy really is - every time.

This is Roger Hjälm

Roger Hjälm is first and foremost a storyteller. During your visit to Katrinelund, or any of our unique gastronomic experiences, you will enjoy many of his stories in the food served. And if you're lucky, you'll also get to hear some of the many anecdotes from breathtaking adventures in the Alps or the years in Europe's various restaurant kitchens; from near-death experiences on the mountain, to a ghostly catering company and on to a chef on the seaside. Today, the spirit of adventure is reflected in the flavourful gastronomy served at Katrinelund - with love, care and humility in focus.
Roger Hjälm, Katrinelund
It was never a foregone conclusion that a passion for food would lead the way in life. When the family had hopes of a career in their own plumbing business, Roger's desire for skiing had already made him look east. Once in the French Alps, he spent his days on the ski slopes or climbing mountain walls, interspersed with the fast-paced environment of the kitchen and happy people. Slowly but surely, a dream of becoming a great cook was born.

The journey from the mountains of the Alps to the calm of Lake Hjälmaren was dramatic. Near-death moments in both an avalanche and a climbing accident took away the ultimate love of the mountains. Various circumstances led him to a restaurant kitchen in France, where daily lectures on everything from roasted garlic to cheese replaced the love of the mountain with the love of gastronomy.
At Rogers Katrinelund, the ingredients for the evening's menu are never more than a walk or boat ride away - this is where the food tastes the best.
Back in his native Örebro in the mid-2000s, the catering company Taste It was started in the premises of the historic Strömparteren. This is where the idea for the cookbook 'Gast-ronomi' was born, after many nights where strange footsteps and running taps scared Roger and his partner. A cookbook that went on to win the prize for the world's best cookbook in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

In 2010, Roger took over Katrinelunds Gästgiveri and Sjökrog. And the cosy sound of the lake has not diminished the desire for escapades - on the contrary. Here, guests can experience gastronomic journeys in the caves of the forest and on the peaks of Kilsbergen, as well as on the ice and glittering waters of Hjälmaren. In Rogers Katrinelund, the ingredients for the evening's menu are never more than a walk or boat ride away - this is where the food tastes the best. With joy, humility and courage, Roger and his staff are now paving the way for all guests to take part in this gastronomic adventure.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Catrinelund's loading site was previously called Återvändan, and was created at the beginning of the 19th century as a large loading site. Here, large quantities of iron were shipped out from Skogaholm and Gryt Mill, to be transported further across Lake Hjälmaren towards Stockholm. It was also busy with both freight and passenger ships, and the harbour's captain was housed in the Faktor building (now the Gästgiveriet).
Today's Sjökrogen started in the early 2000s as a small simple boathouse with room for 10 guests indoors. When Lennart and Pia Carlsson became the sole owners of Sjökrogen in 2009, they began to develop the area, and when Roger Hjälm took over the restaurant and hotel operations, Sjökrogen became larger. Condominiums and summer houses were built and the inn was renovated to accommodate guests all year round.

Today the hotel offers 28 beautifully decorated rooms, spread over two hotel buildings, along with a relaxation area with an outdoor pool, whirlpool, sauna and gym. The Inn houses a bar and restaurant, as well as a banqueting hall and four conference rooms, making Katrinelund a fantastic meeting place for both everyday life and parties, work and pleasure - both in summer and winter.
